Law to Prevent Teen Dating Violence Finds Different Use

In spring of 2010, a law was implemented in Ohio that clarified previously unclear law by allowing people to file protection orders against individuals younger than 18. Although the law was intended to reduce teenage dating violence, the law is now being used locally to resolve disputes between girls.
There has been a surprising number of females seeking protective orders against other females as noted by Judge Luann Cooperrider from Perry County Juvenile Court. Fortunately, “many of the requests are resolved informally with mediation or a mutual contract to restrict contact.” Protective orders have their purpose. While the juvenile civil protection orders might not fulfill their original intent, it remains an option for the youth to seek protection or alternatively resolve their dispute.
