The owner of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), has now begun accepting applications from victims for compensation. The procedure is not simple though! After reading through a 160-page instruction manual, claimants must fill out a 60-page form which requires receipts for items like transportation, medical costs, and lodging.
The Prime Minister said that more than 100 lawyers or experts will help evacuees complete the tricky application process. Claimants may seek compensation directly from Tepco, they may utilize mediation by a third-party group, or they can sue the utility as a few have already done. From now until next March, government panel calculations predict that the nuclear compensation claims will be approximately 3.6 trillion yen ($46.5 billion) according to a government panel calculation and some analysts estimate payments surpassing $130 billion.
