Mediation over Sexual Orientation School Policy

Anoka-Hennepin, Rights Groups in Mediation Session

Two civil rights organizations, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, filed lawsuits this summer against the district on behalf of six former and current students at Anoka-Hennepin based on allegations that the students were persistently bullied while attending the schools for being gay or being perceived as gay. The goal of the suit is to repeal the district’s Sexual Orientation Curriculum policy which singles outs lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered students which arguably perpetuates bullying based on sexual orientation.

The parties met for a mediation session on August 23 and they are set for a second session. The district has said that there will be no comments about progress while discussions are in session. After today, the parties are expected to decide together at the end of the meeting if they wish to issue a statement about what was discussed.
