State Funds Could Help Establish Youth Mediation Program

With surplus funds of more than thirty thousand dollars, the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention wants to create a mediation program targeting at-risk youth. If the county does not earmark the funds, the money will revert back to the state for reuse.
County Manager Robert Hyatt is the chairman of the Juvenile Crime and Prevention Council and said the council wants to explore the idea of creating a mediation program emphasizing family skill-building among parents and delinquent youth. Hyatt said, “One of the things they talked about was mediation. The courts are always trying to find another way to address particular needs and mediation is one thing they talked about.”
