Cherokee Negotiate Gambling Rights

Negotiations Between NC Governor, Cherokees over Casino Games Expansion Become More Complicated

Negotiations between a Cherokee tribe and the state of North Carolina over casino marketing rights and profit-sharing grew more complicated Friday, as the Eastern Band of Cherokee submitted a new proposal to the state. The proposal would require that the Cherokee have exclusive gaming operation and marketing rights west of I-95 – a major traffic artery in the state.

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue and members of the state legislature want to see the Cherokees’ exclusivity rights move westward, but the tribe has offered the state an 8.5% share of all gambling revenues in the new deal and the tribe’s attorney general, Annette Tarnawsky, states that the sides are “fairly close” to reaching agreement.
