More Dead in Yemen as UN Continues Mediations

Violence Rages in Yemen – 15 Killed – As UN Attempts Mediation

Violence raged in Yemen Friday as clashes between government forces and opposition-backed armed tribesmen in southern Taiz city increased the recent death toll to 15. Thursday the UN sent an envoy to conduct a mediation aimed at negotiating the departure of Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and at stemming the violence there.

The violence erupted a day after UN envoy to Yemen Jamal bin Omar arrived in the city of Sanaa for the sixth visit to negotiate implementation of Security Council Resolution 2014. The resolution calls on President Saleh to sign a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative, which would transfer power peacefully and hopefully end the 10-month-long unrest in the Middle Eastern nation.
