Because women often fail to ask for a raise (for a variety of reasons), Victoria Pynchon outlines steps for how to go about asking for a higher salary which is broadly applicable to anyone seeking a raise. Her advice includes formulating a plan and writing a new job description to reframe your value. She also suggests setting a high anchor price as an opening offer and asking for a salary that is fair and justified because humans are hardwired for fairness.

The importance of setting a high first offer cannot be understated. Anchoring is so powerful as Galinsky points out—merely having a high offer on the table will shift the negotiation upward!
