How Libya’s Revolution May be Different

Qaddafi came to power in Libya in 1969 using brute force and a “divide-and-conquer” mentality—constantly dividing families, tribes, and provinces. As the country faces one of the bloodiest uprisings ever, Libyans are gathering in mass demonstrations.

While the army served as a mediator between the people and the government in Tunisia and Egypt, Libya has no such national intermediary. Furthermore, without Qaddafi’s leadership, the country is an “enormous political and social vacuum” without political and social organizations that can step in to fill the void. Without the strong presence of the media, it will be interesting to see how this revolution unfolds.
