After a long hard battle that lasted six years, 37 speech teachers finally won back more than $140,000 in wages for what amounts to unpaid overtime created by “37.5 minutes” of extended time added to each week.
The teachers offer the following advice, “It pays to speak up,” she said. “If you think you’re right, you have to pursue it. A small group wasn’t afraid to fight back – and they won.” Despite the seemingly small issue, the arbitration award shows that these teachers won the battle, and the school district will make important changes to the general education program as a result.
