Kofi Annan says Ivory Coast Mediators Could Draw on Kenya’s Example

As increasing violence in the Ivory Coast threatens the mediation efforts by leaders in the African Union panel who are tasked with finding a solution to the leadership crisis, Kofi Annan discusses similarities between the 2008 post-election crisis in Kenya. He talks about what makes the Ivory Coast situation so challenging and he offers advice for mediation.

The former secretary general of the United Nations offers keen insight into the current conflict in the Ivory Coast by drawing parallels to a conflict he mediated in 2008. Annan suggests that mediators in Ivory Coast “might look to Kenya for lessons in quelling post-election violence, such as sticking to a single mediation process, bringing opponents together in public and pressing forward despite outbreaks of violence.”
