Liberté unravelled: Sarkozy’s burqa ban stumbles into being

Yesterday, April 11, 2011, France implemented a ban on “full face veils.” A citizen now has the right to ask a woman in public wearing the veil to remove it. If she refuses, the citizen is advised to call the police whereupon they may issue a 150 Euro fine.

The country that brought the world “liberté, égalité, fraternité” now, at least on the surface, seems to be instigating laws that amount to “nothing more than a vile instance of legislated racism.” This issue is complex where in a secular country the definition of “free society” is complicated. However, the legislation may simply be a political maneuver by President Sarkozy to appease France’s Right since only approximately two-thousand women wear the burqa anyways and elections are coming up.
