UN Statement on Yemen Mediation

The UN Security Council began talks on Tuesday to address the crisis in Yemen. The parties failed to reach an agreement most likely because Russia and China believe that the Yemeni crisis is merely an internal problem unlike the conflict in Libya which has taken on international dimensions.
Although the government and the opposition have met with Gulf Arab mediators in the past few days, President Ali Abdullah Saleh warns of the possible civil war if he is forced to leave office before 2013. The issuance of a UN statement supporting mediation efforts by Arab Gulf countries is being discussed.
