More than 10 soldiers have died and thousands of villagers have been forced to flee the ancient Hindu ruins. This is the worst fighting since the four days of similar combat in February but the area has been a source of conflict between Thailand and Cambodia since 2008 when Cambodia’s 11th century Preah Vihear temple received UN World Heritage status.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged the countries to stop fighting and agree to a verifiable cease-fire. Indonesia has attempted to intervene but only Cambodia is willing to try mediation while Thailand insists only on bilateral talks between the combatants.
