Harvard historian Roger Owen is one of the pre-eminent minds on the modern Middle East, but even he was “dumbstruck” by the civil unrest sweeping the Arab world. He states that any books that will shed light on it all have yet to be written. In this article Owen selects books that will give some background on the complicated revolutionary movement.
We are living in the historically noteworthy time of the “Arab Spring” and this article lists books from Libya, Yemen, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco that help the reader further understand the cultural and political atmospheres of each country. Most relevant to the field of mediation is “Yemen Chronicle: An Anthropology of War and Mediation” by Steven C. Canton.
