Qatar Pulls Out of Yemen Crisis Mediation

Qatar has pulled out of mediating a deal sponsored by the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) in the three-month political crisis in Yemen. The deal called for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down and a unity government to be formed. Qatar cites “the continued escalation [and] intensity of the confrontations and a lack of wisdom” as reasons for withdrawing from the mediation.

The news of the potential breakdown in mediation was welcomed by the government of Saleh, while the US and Europe, who championed the GCC deal as the “last hope for a peaceful transfer of power,” fear broader violence and confrontations between factions in the military.
