Gulf Mediator to Meet Yemen President Amid Violence

After Qatar pulled out of mediating the deal sponsored by the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) in the political crisis in Yemen on Wednesday, a new Gulf mediator met with the Yemen president on Sunday. The Gulf-brokered plan calls for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down within thirty days.

GCC Secretary General Abdullatif al-Zayani flew in to Sanaa “to achieve a settlement that can satisfy all parties.” The opposition to Saleh seems unimpressed by Zayani’s new attempts to convince Saleh to sign the initiative; however, the chief opposition negotiator has stated he will meet with Zayani “if he has anything new to offer.”
