Zimbabwe leader President Robert Mugabe’s failing health may jeopardize efforts to resolve his nation’s political crisis. Despite five trips to Singapore for health reasons, Mugabe, age 87, insists that he is fit to govern even after ruling the nation for more than 31 years.
The mediators from the African National Congress who are working on resolving this dispute have noted concerns that “should Mugabe die or retire before constitutional reforms are complete, rivalry over his succession could delay elections meant to end the nation’s troubled two-year coalition.”
