Tensions Grow in Yemen

Yemen leader again balks at leaving

Hundreds of thousands of people have protested for the last three months defying a bloody crackdown, to demand Ali Abdullah Saleh’s ouster. Supporters of Yemen’s leader were armed with guns, knives, and swords, have trapped the US, European, and Arab ambassadors when the president refused to sign an agreement requiring him to step down in the next month.

“If the mediation collapses, many fear further deterioration of the political situation, including an escalation of armed conflict between Saleh’s loyalists and military units that have joined the opposition.”
