The Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program offered through Cook County Circuit Court offers free legal services and counseling. More than 1,800 homeowners have obtained assistance from the program when sued for foreclosure. Court officials are looking into expanding the program geographically to serve a larger region.
Reports indicate that “the multimillion-dollar program helped 216 people, a third of its participants, keep their homes since it began in April 2010.” Another third received counseling about foreclosures and are in the normal litigation process while another third have negotiated settlements with the bank and are no longer in their homes.
