The conflict continues to escalate surrounding the 4.6 square kilometers adjoining the millennium-old Hindu temple on the border of Cambodia and Thailand. Dozens have died and been injured and thousands have been displaced since February.
“Rooted in ancient enmities and the legacy of the colonial era, the fighting is damaging the entire region,” and the dispute is so virulent that even a short-term settlement may require third-party intervention. Achieving peace largely depends on Thailand’s domestic political crisis and Cambodia’s willingness to participate in the process.
