Improving ADR in the Islands

DOI Conference Aims to Teach Alternative Dispute Resolution

The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs is sponsoring a conference on ADR in San Francisco the week of May 18, which will bring together various speakers including experienced ADR providers, judges, and lawyers to discuss alternative dispute resolution procedures that will help enable the islands to resolve disputes quickly, fairly, and cost-effectively.

States and local governments are increasingly using ADR to settle international, commercial or labor disputes without court intervention. “With current restraints on local government budgets, court systems are finding it difficult to meet swelling demands [and] ADR could offer an innovative supplement to the judicial process that relieves some of the pressure on already overburdened court systems.”
