Bankruptcy Judge Lets Some Payments Proceed in Milwaukee Archdiocese Case

The Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January which impacts the more than a dozen civil fraud lawsuits over its handling of clergy sex abuse cases. As the bankruptcy proceedings continue, the judge ordered the archdiocese to file the names of victims seeking anonymity in court to be placed under seal, a requirement the church had sought to avoid.
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s mediation process for victims of clergy sex abuse came under fire in a bankruptcy hearing on Wednesday where victims characterized the process as humiliating and misleading. One woman who had been molested said, “I left there feeling like they were doing it to me again, like they were deceiving me, lying to me.”
