Peer Mediation to End Violence

Mediation is Key to Curb School Violence
Trinidad & Tobago’s Newsday
June 20, 2011
In Trinidad and Tobago, school staff are receiving mediation training from the Mediation Board of Trinidad and Tobago as part of a greater strategy to curb violence in schools. Mediation is also part of the strategy to deal with discipline problems in the schools.
The conference focused on recent shootings and fights that have occurred between schoolgirls as evidence that schools are no longer a safe place. However, Trinidad and Tobago is a great place for mediation because as one individual put it, “we have a talking culture, which is good for peer mediation.” Hopefully, the increase in mediation will create peaceable classrooms and peaceable schools.
