Sweden Preschool Prevents Gender Stereotypes

No ‘Him’ or ‘Her’; Preschool Fights Gender Bias

A preschool in Sweden avoids using words like “him” and “her” and carefully chooses toys, books, and colors to prevent children from falling into gender stereotypes. One teacher notes how society expects children to be one way or another but this school gives kids an opportunity to be whoever they want to be.

Funded by taxpayer dollars, the school in the liberal Sodermalm district of Stockholm is for children age one to six and is “among the most radical examples of Sweden’s efforts to engineer equality between the sexes from childhood onward.” The core mission of breaking down gender roles is based on a theory that even in highly-egalitarian-minded Sweden, society gives boys an unfair edge.
