Last week, workers from Air Algerie staged a strike over pay which grounded dozens of planes. The two sides began talks over the weekend but the union leaders suspended negotiations claiming that promises to reinstate workers who were sacked during the strike were not honored. The crew members have also declined the offer from the state airline’s chief for a 20 percent pay hike.
Union representatives say that negotiations will resume Thursday with the main focus being on a pay hike. The ailing airline carries nearly 3.5 million passengers annually to more than 70 destinations, and ranks fourth in Africa, behind Egypt Air, South African Airways and Royal Air Maroc.
