Couples in Ontario, Canada seeking to end their marriage will now be required to attend a mandatory two-hour information session run by volunteer lawyers and social workers whose goal is “to educate parents about the effects of divorce on both their bank accounts and their children.” This pre-divorce session will help unclog the family court system and encourage settlement over litigation.
Chris Bentley, Attorney General explains how this program will help reduce the emotional and financial cost of divorce and resolve issues as quickly as possible. While the pilot program already operates in 17 courts, this recent expansion will include more than 50 provincial courts. The program costs more than $7.2 million per year and also funds onsite mediation for couples who want to forgo litigation.
