Russia's Role as Mediator

Why is Obama Giving Libya to the Russians?

Last week, Secretary of State Clinton and President Obama welcomed Russia’s effort to insert itself as a mediator in the Libya conflict. Blogger John Bolton believes this is just one mistake that has been made in dealing with Libya. Insisting that Russia will fail in its mediation efforts, Bolton says “Welcoming Russian intercession between NATO and a military opponent like Libya is nothing less than a massive humiliation for the Western alliance.”

Bolton insists that a worldview that favors mediation will only cause a nation to fall into obscurity. While this view may be a little extreme, he raises some interesting concerns in terms of Russia’s ability to serve as a neutral and impartial mediator.
