This weekend, Istanbul hosted a group of high ranking diplomats concerned about maintaining peace around the world. It was an unofficial conference on the modalities of a UN Security Council Resolution which passed unanimously at the first session concerning “strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes and conflict prevention and resolution” under the title of “prevention of armed conflict.”
While this is the first resolution on peace mediation adopted by the UN, it is also the first UN move towards establishing principles to govern mediation activities as a tool to prevent armed conflicts around the world. As part of the resolution, the UN Secretary General will give a report on peace mediation to the General Assembly every year and the “the resolution gives a role to not only member states but actors like regional organizations, civil society and particularly to women.”
