Business in Conflicted Sudan 

South Sudan Presents a Mixed Bag for Business

Kenya has consistently played a role in the conflict in Sudan and hopes to reap a big reward. Kenya businesses have set up shop in South Sudan and expect “huge dividend from Nairobi’s assistance to the country’s leaders since the war with the North broke out.”

As a key ally of South Sudan, Kenya has served as the role of mediator in the peace process that led to a deal in 2005. Furthermore, director of Presidency and Cabinet Affairs Office in charge of Kenya Southern Sudan Liaison Office said, “We have been strategic in winning influence in South Sudan and the private sector should take advantage of these achievements by taking up business opportunities.” Mediation may inherently be a good thing in ongoing conflicts like these—it’s interesting however to consider the inevitable “tit for tat” mentality that might result.
