As the economy suffered, couples tried to put on hold the inevitable financial nightmare that accompanies a divorce. Some individuals had even resorted to house-sharing agreements for couples who could not afford divorce but still had to live in the same house. Now, however, family lawyers in the UK are reporting an upsurge of people who are visiting their divorce attorney and deciding they can no longer wait.
Given the economy, it is often more difficult for couples to reach an agreement. For example, “Clean break settlements have been the preferred solution since 1984…however, couples are having to be innovative in order to get a settlement, and that often includes keeping some kind of financial relationship continuing between them.” As divorce settlements become trickier, mediation plays a role by helping parties address issues while maintaining a relationship.
