Conflict Continues

Of Defections and Mediation
Khaleej Times
August 30, 2011
Within the Syrian security forces, there has been a series of defections most likely as a result of the fall of Col. Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. The protestors continue to increase exponentially and it may soon be the tipping point for President Bashar Al Assad’s regime if the defections continue.
Brute force and the reform measures introduced by the president have failed to stop the protests. The regional Arab states’ concern is rightly focused on resolving the situation within Syria peacefully and “International efforts involving diplomatic means to pressure and persuade Assad to change course are ongoing as are other deterrent measures in the form of international sanctions.”
