UN Official Stresses Role of Preventative Diplomacy

The United Nations has recently given preventive diplomacy higher priority since the world body is working harder to stop conflicts before they truly start. B. Lynn Pasco, UN under-secretary-general for political affairs said, “What we need to do is to make sure that we’re out there fast, we’re out there early, we’re out there trying to solve problems before they begin.”
Ban Ki-moon’ tenure as UN Secretary-General has been partly responsible for this general emphasis at the UN in helping to prevent conflict in Malawi, Kenya, and Kyrgyzstan. On September 22, the annual General Assembly plenary session will host a discussion by the Security Council on the maintenance of international peace and security in the context of conflict prevention.
