Palestinian Path Uncertain

Western Envoys Try Mediation Ahead of Palestinian UN Bid

Western envoys shuttle between Israeli and Palestinian leaders to attempt to stop the Palestinias from going to the General Assembly meeting next week to seek U.N. membership. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman fears if this happens it will be of “grave consequence.” U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner fears the Palestinian plan will be “counterproductive” to peace talks which he believes is the only path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

There are concerns about the consequences that Palestian action might have. However, there is hope that the parties can work towards resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton made a statement earlier where she expressed her hopes that the coming days, mediators “will be able to achieve ‘something’ that enables negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.”
