In Australia, all divorcing parties must attempt to resolve their case through compulsory conciliation. Now, a new initiative will require couples who cannot resolve their property disputes through the initial conciliation to undergo further mediation. The goal is to cut delays in family court, and if the initiative works, it may be extended to simple custody disputes, says spokeswoman for the Family Court.
“The trial of a second conciliation, conducted by a mediator experienced in family matters, could cost couples about $2000 each” whereas trial can cost “about $7000 to $10,000 each, a day, for a hearing.”
