While most literature on conflict emphasizes that “perspective-taking,” that is – taking the time to understand a conflict from other parties’ viewpoints – typically minimizes rifts between sides and can lead to resolution, new studies in psychology are showing how such gestures of sympathy can harden parties’ stances and actually exacerbate conflict cycles.
