China Rejects Philippine U.N. Mediation Effort

Conflicting Claims to Territory in South China Sea Remains Unresolved

Philippines seeks a declaration that Beijing’s moves in the potentially oil-rich waters is unlawful. Last month, the Philippines told China it was planning on taking the countries’ conflicting claims to a tribunal operating under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
