Lawsuit over Rhode Island Truancy Program goes to Mediation

ACLU filed class action lawsuit against the Family Court truancy program of Rhode Island which allegedly violates the rights of parents and children by operating in secrecy. The Supreme Court of Rhode Island ordered mediation to resolve the dispute.

The family court system is implementing new requirements to record all truancy proceedings to alleviate the ACLU’s concerns. Although the ACLU is not satisfied, hopefully the parties can work together in mediation to create a truancy program that protects parents and children and saves Rhode Island taxpayer dollars by keeping this case out of court!
