Hamas and PLO Agree to Deal for Palestinian Government

Rival Palestinian factions have agreed to form a unified government, which will be sworn in by the end of January. The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Hamas leader, Khaled Meshaal, met in Cairo this week to agree on the groundbreaking deal.

The deal follows several days of heated negotiation between representatives of Palestinian political groups led by Hamas and Fatah. During the talks, the two groups agreed to allow a Hamas representative to serve on a committee that will study the restructuring of the Fatah-dominated Palestine Liberation Organization, including perhaps holding PLO elections.
