Mediation Begins Again

It has been more than a month since negotiations between the NFL and players ended but today they return to the table for court-ordered mediation. The league wants to slash pay for first-round draft picks by reducing guaranteed pay by nearly 60 percent with the money going toward veterans’ salaries and benefits.

Guaranteed payments to first-rounders have increased by 233 percent from 2000 to 2010. In addition to slowing the growth rate of guaranteed payments, “The league’s offer would free more than $1.2 billion over four years through 2015.” While both sides have met with the mediator in private sessions already, it will be interesting to chart the progress of the mediation and how the mediated settlement takes shape.
