Mediation Talks Set for Mater Dei-CIF Lawsuit

Santa Ana Mater Dei and the Roman Catholic diocese of Orange filed an action against the CIF Southern Section. Mater Dei alleges that the Southern Section Commissioner showed a bias towards student athletes acting in a “discriminatory manner in how rules are enforced and applied toward its student athletes.” Particularly at issue are controversial CIF rule that bars athletes from transferring for sports reasons in need of clarification.

The jury trial was set for October 3 in Orange County Superior Court until it was postponed until February. As both sides prepared for depositions, counsel for both sides agreed to participate in mediation despite rejecting it last year.
