Yemen’s Saleh Calls for Ramadan Talks to End Crisis

In a statement issued for Ramadan, Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said, “There is no alternative to dialogue which sets out from national and constitutional principles.” Saleh’s call for dialogue with his opponents falls on the eve of Muslim’s fasting month of Ramadan. He hopes to resolve the crisis over demands for his removal which has paralyzed Yemen and thwarted all mediation attempts.

The opposition continues to reject invitations to negotiate until Saleh signs a Gulf Arab plan to ease him out of power. Although Saleh has three times appeared to accept the plan only to reject it at the last minute, he continues to advocate for dialogue saying, “We reiterate on this occasion the need for commitment by all sides to the Gulf initiative.”
