BP Said to Seek U.S. Settlement of Spill Pollution Claims

US officials and BP are negotiating a settlement regarding pollution claims amounting to as much as $17.6 billion in fines from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Under the Clean Water Act, the government can seek $1,100 per barrel of oil spilled and a judge can increase the amount to $4,300 per barrel if there is a finding of gross negligence.
